Yasuj (یاسوج), the capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province (استان کهگیلویه و بویراحمد), lies within the dramatic landscape of the Zagros Mountains (رشتهکوه زاگرس) at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Dena Mountain range (کوه دنا), the region stands in stark contrast to the arid plateau that dominates much of Iran.
The natural environment of Yasuj is defined by dense oak forests (جنگلهای بلوط), alpine valleys, waterfalls, and the Beshar River (رودخانه بشار). This mountainous ecosystem, shaped by relatively high rainfall and seasonal snowmelt, creates one of the most fertile and verdant landscapes in the country.
Because of its geography, settlement patterns in the region historically developed around rivers, springs, and mountain pastures. Traditional architecture in nearby villages often reflects the Zagros' climatic conditions, incorporating stone construction, sloped roofs, and terraces adapted to steep terrain.
Today, Yasuj is widely known as the “Capital of Nature in Iran,” where forests, mountain peaks, and rivers form a dramatic landscape that highlights the environmental diversity of the Iranian plateau.
