The Frozen Heart of the Desert: The Yakhchal of Bam

The Yakhchal of Bam, an ancient Persian ice house, used khesht (خشت) mud bricks, sarooj (ساروج) mortar, and a conical gonbad (گنبد) dome to store ice in the desert. Fed by qanats (قنات) and shaded by divar-e sayeh-afkan (دیوار سایه‌افکن) walls, it demonstrates ingenious passive cooling within the Arg-e Bam (ارگ بم) citadel.
