Yazd Grand Mosque (مسجد جامع یزد)

The Yazd Grand Mosque (مسجد جامع یزد), largely built during the Ilkhanid period (c. 1324 CE), is a defining landmark of Yazd’s skyline. Its monumental iwan (ایوان), blue tilework, and tall twin minarets exemplify Persian Islamic architecture and anchor the cityscape of Badgirs (بادگیرها) and adobe buildings.

  • Yazd Grand Mosque (مسجد جامع یزد) is one of the most important historic landmarks in Yazd (یزد) and a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. The mosque was largely constructed during the Ilkhanid period in the 14th century (around 1324 CE), although parts of the site date back to earlier periods. It is famous for its tall entrance portal (ایوان), decorated with intricate blue and turquoise tilework, and for its two slender minarets, among the tallest in Iran. The mosque’s design reflects the principles of Persian Islamic architecture, with a large courtyard, prayer hall, and richly decorated surfaces featuring geometric patterns, calligraphy, and tile mosaics. As a central religious and architectural landmark, the Yazd Grand Mosque contributes significantly to the historic cityscape of domes, wind catchers (بادگیرها), and adobe structures that characterize Yazd.
