Dowlat Abad Garden (باغ دولت‌آباد)

Dowlat Abad Garden (باغ دولت‌آباد), built around 1750 in Yazd (یزد), exemplifies the Persian garden (باغ ایرانی). Its 33-meter Badgir (بادگیر) cools the pavilion through water channels within a chaharbagh (چهارباغ) layout. Recognized in the UNESCO Persian Garden listing (2011), it demonstrates sophisticated environmental design in Iran’s desert architecture.

  • Dowlat Abad Garden (باغ دولت‌آباد) in Yazd (یزد) is one of the finest examples of the traditional Persian garden (باغ ایرانی) and was built around 1750 during the Afsharid period by Mohammad Taqi Khan Bafqi, the ruler of Yazd. The garden is famous for its tall Badgir (بادگیر), about 33 meters high, which is considered one of the tallest wind catchers in Iran. This Badgir works with water channels and pools to cool the pavilion and surrounding spaces, demonstrating the sophisticated environmental design of Persian architecture in a desert climate. The garden follows the classical Persian chaharbagh (چهارباغ) layout, in which water channels divide the garden into symmetrical sections, with trees, pavilions, and shaded pathways. As part of the Persian Garden UNESCO World Heritage listing (2011), Dowlat Abad Garden represents the integration of architecture, water management, and landscape design in Iran’s historic desert cities.
